June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

More than a million senior citizens suffer from or neglect in a single year, many of whom live in , according to the National Center on Elder . For every case reported to authorities, more than five go unreported. These startling statistics have rallied the eldercare advocacy group International Network for the Prevention of Elder (INPEA) to declare a day to raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic process affecting elder and neglect through community events aimed at promoting understanding of and neglect of older persons.

Veterans home cited for putting residents at risk of harm

A U.S. Justice Department report claims that residents at William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette, Alabama, suffered significant harm and risk from the facility’s inadequate medical and nursing services, accoding to the Mobile Press Register.

Alabama Among Worst

A review of the nation’s nursing home inspection reports by the Congressional Government Accountability Office (GAO) lists Alabama among nine states with the worst records of inspection accuracy, saying inspectors missed serious problems in more than 25 percent of all inspections from 2002-2007. The report said most states still fared dismally, missing at least one serious deficiency in 15 percent of all inspections.
