Nursing home resident dies after fall down steps

stairs 100x100Early Sunday morning an 86-year-old resident of Kruse Village retirement home in Brenham, Texas, pushed the wheelchair he was riding in out of the sight of nursing home staff and through a security door to a short flight of steps. That’s when police believe he accidentally rolled down the stairs and sustained serious injuries that killed him. While police strongly believe the was an accident, because he died of unnatural causes they are investigating how and why the accident occurred.

Facility facing lawsuits for leaving patients unattended

AXR001025The wife of an 80-year-old who suffered from dementia moved her husband into Elderberry Square assisted living facility in Florence, Oregon, so the staff there could give her husband the care she could no longer manage on her own. But each time she visited him over the two months he was there, something just didn’t seem right. Her frail husband was left unsupervised, during which he fell repeatedly. One fall resulted in a broken wrist. She also found him several times lying in his own waste.

Veterans home cited for putting residents at risk of harm

A U.S. Justice Department report claims that residents at William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette, Alabama, suffered significant harm and risk from the facility’s inadequate medical and nursing services, accoding to the Mobile Press Register.

Family sues county, administrator resigns over nun’s death

Here is an update on a story we reported last month about an investigation into a Rockland County, N.Y., nursing home where a 90-year-old nun was killed when the closet in her room toppled over onto her. According to Lo Hud, New York’s Lower Hudson Valley newspaper, in the wake of the investigation into Summit Park Nursing Care, the patient-services administrator has announced he plans to resign and the maintenance director is taking an early retirement package. The ’s patient-services administrator Aldo Trolani also served as the county’s acting commissioner of hospitals for the Department of Hospitals.

Family demands investigation after closet falls on resident

No one expected Sister Mary Murray to die the way she did.

While in her room at the Summit Park Nursing Home in Rockland County, New York, the 90-year-old nun was crushed and eventually died after the closet in her room toppled over onto her. Her family accepted the ’s explanation. It was just a freak accident.

Then came the ABC 7 Eyewitness News investigation that revealed that two other residents in the home were injured by falling closets.

Minnesota nursing home aides abuse patients for thrills

Fifteen Minnesota nursing home residents with dementia were abused, taunted and groped by four aides who were simply looking for on-the-job thrills, according to a story in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune.

Nursing home fines, bonuses

On March 3, the Des Moines Register reported that in 2007 the state fined 23 Iowa $10,000 or more for providing substandard care. Some of those homes were also hit with federal fines and sanctions against their state licenses.
