Families, advocate speak out at Albert Lea town hall meeting

Jan Reshetar stood up at a press conference last week and said she thought her mother-in-law’s agitation was caused by her Alzheimer’s disease. She was mortified to learn that her 84-year-old family member was actually trying desperately to communicate through her cognitively impaired state, trying to tell her family about the humiliating abuse and sexual taunting she was subjected to for months as a resident of the Good Samaritan Society nursing home in Albert Lea, Minn.

Disgruntled employee accused of putting urine in ice bin

Kathleen Chmura thought it was her soda that tasted funny. Then she realized it was the ice. And it tasted like urine.

Chmura had scooped the ice from the ice bin at By the Lake senior assisted living facility she owns in Hayden, Idaho. She immediately had a suspect in mind – a disgruntled employee who had just joined two other employees in a walkout to protest of a firing of two employees three days prior, according to The Seattle Times.

Caregiver steals thousands from patient’s home

A former employee of the Cambridge Retirement Residence in Springfield, Mo., was so generous a caregiver that she helped the family of 88-year-old Blanche Fenton move out of home and into the Cambridge nursing home. And then she returned after family had left the house and raided it of various items, including cassette tapes, a slow cooker, clothing, silverware, lamps, jewelry and figurines, according to the News-Leader.

Physical therapist charged with unlicensed practice, forgery

Brent P. Dellarma was a practicing physical therapist employed by Genesis at Sandy River Center for Health Care in Farmington, , for nearly a year between 2007 and 2008, until management suspected something was awry with his paperwork. The man had worked as a physical therapy assistant and then as a physical therapist at Sandy River Center. He had documentation filed with the Board of Examiners in Physical Therapy in the state’s Department of Professional and Financial regulation. However, an investigation found that the paperwork Dellarma filed was bogus and that he had misrepresented his qualifications, according to the Morning Sentinel.

Nurse arrested for leaving 21 assisted living residents alone

Episania Fitzgerald was working her nursing shift at Pine Tree Manor assisted living facility in Largo, Fla., Friday night, but she had someplace better to be. Since she was the only staff member on duty that night, she called on a resident at the home to be in charge of the other residents in her absence. Fitzgerald then walked out the doors, leaving the 21 frail and elderly residents alone.
